Watershed
Inventories
The Source
of it All
A watershed is defined as the area of land
that drains to a given lake, pond, or stream. The important thing
to remember is that all of that water flowing off of a watershed
carries nutrients, soil, and other pollutants that can greatly
affect the quality of your favorite lake. When talking about
lake health, it's helpful to think of the nutrients and pollution
flowing off of the land as a lake's diet. If a lake or stream
doesn't have a healthy diet, there's a good chance that its water
quality will be degraded.
As with people, "diet change" alone
may not be enough to fix all lake health problems, but it is
a necessary step toward long-term recovery. Identifying the major
sources of pollutants in a lake's watershed is often the top
priority when it comes to improving lake health because it truly
focuses on curing the disease rather than just treating the symptoms
of polluted waters.
A Freshwater
Watershed Inventory can be customized to include......
| - |
Watershed Boundary Delineation - what areas drain to your waters? |
| - |
Soil & Land Use Characterization - determine how land
use may be affecting your waters |
| - |
Surface Water Hydrology - how does stormwater runoff get into
your lake or stream? |
| - |
Computer
Model Development
- a valuable
tool for estimating the current amount of pollution running into
your waters and guiding future management activities |
Freshwater Scientific Services uses cutting-edge technology to conduct watershed
inventories. This includes Global Positioning Systems (GPS),
aerial photography, digital maps, 3D-topography models, Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), and computer simulations. Using these
tools, we will work with you to identify sources of pollution
in your lake's watershed and help you define a clear path to
your goals.
